Statistical methods for Cosmic Web analysis

Job level
Post-doctoral fellowship
Start date

Description

The ByoPiC (The Baryon Picture of the Cosmos) team, funded by an advanced ERC grant, invites applications for postdoctoral positions with the objective of mapping and characterising the baryon distribution at the largest cosmic scales.

We are opening a postdoctoral position at the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), Orsay (France), to hire a young researcher willing to contribute her/his expertise and enthusiasm at the service of the ByoPiC project. The successful candidate will work on the development and optimisation of statistical methods 1) for global identification, supervised classification and reconstruction of the cosmic web; and/or 2) for the detection of cosmic filaments and super-clusters/voids.

We encourage applications from candidates with statistical and image processing academic backgrounds. Experience or expertise in cosmic web and Large Scale Structure will be appreciated.

The post-doctoral position (duration 2 years, up to 3) is open at the IAS. The IAS is conveniently located 30 min by suburban train south of Paris, on the Paris-Sud/Saclay University campus. It hosts science groups focusing on planetary systems, solar & stellar physics, astrochemistry, the interstellar medium and cosmology. The ByoPiC team is major constituent of the cosmology group of the IAS, deeply involved in the Planck and Euclid missions and in future CMB space missions. It is active in many fields of cosmology in particular large scale structures, CMB, cosmic reionisation, clusters of galaxies.

The anticipated starting date is September 2018, but earlier dates can be envisaged. Benefits include full access to the French healthcare system (medical, dental, maternity/paternity leave, etc.). They may also include up to 40% subsidy for public transport fees.

Candidates are invited to submit their application at (https://byopic.eu/form/job-submission) as a single pdf file including a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a summary of past research (maximum 3 pages) and a statement research interests (maximum 2 pages). At submission, they should provide contacts of three referees who will receive an invitation (from no_reply@byopic.eu) to upload their recommendation letters. For full consideration, applications should be received by Dec. 15, 2017.
